Inclusion at Millburn Primary School
At Millburn Primary School, Coleraine, inclusion is at the very heart of everything we do. As a fully inclusive and integrated school, we are committed to nurturing, respecting and supporting every child entrusted to our care, ensuring that each pupil is given the opportunity to thrive and become the very best version of themselves.
We recognise that every child is unique, with their own strengths, interests and needs. Our approach to inclusion reflects this, combining high-quality teaching in the classroom with tailored support and specialist provision. Our experienced Learning Support Team works closely with teachers and families to ensure that any barriers to learning are identified early and addressed effectively. Through a combination of in-class support, small group teaching and targeted interventions, we ensure that all children can access the full breadth of school life and achieve success.
A key part of our inclusive provision is our dedicated Nurture Team, led by Mrs Young and Petula Francais. Working from our purpose-built Nurture Support Room, The Lookout, they provide a safe, welcoming and supportive environment for children who may benefit from additional emotional or social support. This nurturing approach helps pupils to develop confidence, resilience and positive relationships, enabling them to fully engage in their learning and school experience.
In addition, our Learning Support Centres – LSC1 and LSC2, led by the highly experienced Mrs Wilson and Mrs Blair, offer outstanding, state-of-the-art facilities. These include specialist sensory spaces equipped with features such as bubble tubes, fibre optics and calming environments designed to meet a wide range of sensory and learning needs. These carefully designed spaces allow pupils to regulate, refocus and re-engage with their learning in a way that suits them best.
Our Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) team further enhances our inclusive provision, delivering focused small-group support to pupils who may require an extra boost in core skills such as literacy and numeracy. This targeted approach ensures that children receive the right support at the right time, helping them to build confidence and make meaningful progress.
In every classroom across the school, inclusion is embedded in daily practice. High-quality teaching, adaptive approaches and a strong ethos of care ensure that all pupils feel valued, supported and inspired. We foster a culture where individuality is celebrated, differences are respected and every achievement is recognised.
At Millburn Primary School, inclusion is not simply a provision—it is a philosophy. By working in close partnership with parents, carers and external agencies, we create a supportive and collaborative environment where every child is empowered to succeed—academically, socially and emotionally.
